5 vendors killed after speeding truck rams into them near Thangshalai-Shillong bypass

Shillong: In a tragic incident, at least 5 local vendors selling vegetables on the roadside near Thangshalai-Shillong Bypass died on the spot when a speeding truck rammed into them in the morning hours on Saturday.

Police sources informed Meghalaya News 24 that four vendors died on the spot after they were hit by a truck, while the fifth one died on his way to the hospital. “The matter is under investigation but the preliminary investigation suggests brake failure, but the real reason will only be known once the investigation completes,” said the source.

According to a traffic police source, “There were four women and one male vendor who died in the accident when they were hit by one loaded truck (UP 51AT 2949) at Umkhen Thangshalai Shillong Bypass bridge, we could intercept the vehicle but the driver managed to flee away.”

The deceased who died on the spot is identified as Balarihun Kharkongor 27 D/o. Bidalin Kharkongor, Gracefully Nongbri 23, D/o. ïarilang Nongbri, Banteibha Bina D/o Smti. Pliantibon Bina, Shantilang Nongbri 28 yrs D/o Thrisha Nongbri.

Later, one Shri Korbarsing Kharduit, 52 years was critically injured, and he died while on his way to the hospital.
